Live Rock Nitrifying Bacteria. Fish and other animals produce a lot of metabolic waste – ammonia and organisms that must be processed by an extensive population of nitrifying bacteria. In a live rock system, the animal and plant metabolisms are in a better balance. Since the biolead of animal and plant tissue is more equal, the plants quickly use the ammonia and nitrate produced by animals and bacteria. These animal metabolic products are produced in the immediate vicinity of the plants, and in the same organism in the case of corals, this enhances the tight cycle of available nutrients. Live rock, which functions as a aerobic as well as a non-aerobic biological filter, is on the site of nutrient exchange and “mops up” unwanted nitrogen compounds. |
| Live sand also acts as a filter and home for small animals. It helps maintain the tank pH and provides a base for building your aquarium. | ![]() |
